Grade-Level Content Standards
Second Grade is a fun and exciting year as your child develops conventional use of basic skills. Students will be reading for meaning in fiction and nonfiction texts. Writing becomes more developed. In math, students deepen their understanding of basic skills as they apply to our everyday life.
Ways to Support your Second Grade Student
- Make sure that your child is reading a minimum of 20 minutes each day. Encourage him to read a variety of text (ie. picture books, chapter books, fiction, nonfiction, magazines, etc.)
- Have your child demonstrate how she plans to complete her homework. What will she finish first? What additional tools might she need? How will she get help if needed?
- Help your child see how you use math in your everyday life (ie. telling time, reading a calendar, counting money, adding/subtracting at the market, etc.).
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Children at this age need 10-12 hours of sleep each night to rejuvinate from the learning and growing process.
The State of California has adopted Common Core State Standards for each academic area. These are the standards that each child is expected to achieve to be prepared for third grade. Below are links to the CCSS in each area.
